This past Sunday, I watched Elisa pack her bags and head off to college.
It is a moment every parent anticipates, yet no amount of preparation can fully prepare you for the emotions that come with it.
As I hugged her goodbye, I felt a mix of pride, excitement, and an overwhelming sense of change washing over me.
Our home suddenly feels a little quieter, a little emptier, and as I sit down to write this, I can’t help but reflect on what this new chapter means for both of us.
A journey of growth for both of us
Elisa has always been independent and eager to explore the world on her terms. Watching her grow into the confident young woman she is today has been one of the greatest joys of my life.
As she embarks on this journey, I realize that this is a time of growth for me as well. It is a time to rediscover who I am, not just as a mother, but as an individual.
When our children are young, our lives revolve around their needs, schedules, and dreams. Now, with Elisa starting her new adventure, I am faced with the opportunity to reconnect with my passions and aspirations. It is a bittersweet moment, knowing that while I’ll always be her mother, the daily routines we share are changing.
Thankfully, I am not alone in this. Marco, my 15-year-old son, and Pietro, my husband, have been my rocks. Their support and love make this transition easier.

Embracing the change
The house feels different without Elisa’s presence. The once lively mornings are now quieter, and the dinner table has one less voice. It is an adjustment, and I am learning to embrace this new normal.
I find comfort in knowing that she is following her dreams, and that, in itself, is a beautiful thing. I am also discovering new ways to fill the space she has left behind, whether it is spending more time in my sewing room, taking long walks with Blue, or cooking a new recipe.
Change has never been easy for me, but this transition is teaching me the value of letting go and trusting in the journey. It is a reminder that while life moves forward, the love and connection we share with our children remain constant, no matter the distance.

Staying connected
Even though Elisa is away, I know that our bond will only grow stronger. We have already set up daily calls, and I have promised to bring her care packages filled with little reminders of home.
In a way, this separation is helping us connect on a deeper level. Our conversations have become more meaningful, and I cherish the moments we share, even if they are through a phone screen.
Marco and I often talk about how things have changed, and it is comforting to have him by my side during this transition.

Rediscovering myself
As Elisa begins this new chapter, I am inspired to do the same. I am rediscovering what it means to have time for myself, to pursue hobbies that I have put on hold, and to explore new interests. It is a chance to nurture my growth, just as I have nurtured hers all these years.
This journey of navigating the empty nest is both challenging and rewarding, filled with moments of nostalgia and excitement for what lies ahead.
I am learning to navigate the empty nest, finding comfort in the memories we have made and the new ones we’ll create together in this next phase of life.

Looking ahead
As I reflect on Elisa’s journey to college, I am filled with a sense of pride and gratitude.
She is stepping into the world with confidence, and I am cheering her on every step of the way. While I’ll always miss the everyday moments we shared, I know this is just the beginning of a new chapter for both of us.
To all the parents going through this same transition, know that you are not alone, and it is okay to feel a mix of emotions, to be sad, proud, and excited all at once.
This is a time of growth for everyone involved, and while it may take some getting used to, it is also a beautiful opportunity to rediscover ourselves and deepen our connections with our children.

To new beginnings, to embracing change, and to the endless possibilities that lie ahead, for Elisa, for Marco, for me, for Pietro, and all of us on this journey.
Thanks for hanging out with me today!
Se you next time!
Valentina
