Have you ever felt that subtle shift when the seasons change? In most parts of the country, fall is marked by the changing colors of the leaves and a crispness in the air. Here in Arizona, we don’t get the vibrant fall foliage, but we do start to feel the slight drop in temperatures – enough to finally be able to step outside and enjoy a walk without melting.
As the heat starts to ease, I find myself drawn to spending more time outdoors, reconnecting with nature, and using this seasonal shift as a chance to refocus on personal growth. With the fresh energy that comes with cooler weather, it feels like the perfect time to reset.
Below are seven simple and practical ways you can use this time of year to nurture your own self-improvement journey.
- Reflect during daily walks
Now that the temperatures are dropping, I have found it refreshing to walk both in the morning and evening. Walking gives me valuable space to think – whether I am setting intentions for the day ahead during a morning walk or reflecting on what I have learned from the day during an evening stroll. I love taking these walks with my dog, Blue, who is the perfect companion for my morning routine. And honestly, it doesn’t need to be anything strenuous – just half an hour of walking each day can make a huge difference in your mindset.
Even though waking up early to walk can be hard for most, it is become easier for me as I already have to wake up around 6:00 a.m. to take Marco to school. I understand the struggle of rising early, but trust me, once it becomes part of your routine, the benefits are undeniable.
• Tip: Use a daily walk to center yourself. In the morning, it can help you mentally organize your day. In the evening, it is a chance to process the events and lessons of the day.

- Embrace early mornings for self-care
One habit that’s had a big impact on my sense of well-being is waking up earlier. When I take that extra time to journal, it is like a brain dump for all the thoughts swirling in my head. This clears the mental clutter and allows me to start my day with clarity.
• Try This: Set your alarm 30 minutes earlier and dedicate that quiet time to a self-care routine. Whether it is journaling, stretching, or sipping coffee without distraction, you’ll notice the mental shift.

- Let go of perfectionism and accept change
For me, letting go of perfectionism has been an ongoing challenge, but I have made great progress since starting therapy. My anxiety used to drive me to micromanage everything, striving for unrealistic perfection in all areas of my life. But as I have worked through my anxiety, I have learned to be more accepting of myself. Some days, I might not feel like going for a walk or reading a book, and that’s okay – watching a movie instead can be just as fulfilling.
One of the biggest lessons in letting go has come with my daughter, Elisa, leaving for college. Releasing control over many roles I played in her life has been tough, but it’s made this year’s changes easier to handle. Accepting change doesn’t come naturally, but through personal experiences like this, I have realized that letting go opens the door for personal growth.
• Tip: Practice self-compassion and allow yourself some grace. Letting go of perfectionism doesn’t mean giving up; it means accepting that progress is still progress, even when it is imperfect.

- Practice gratitude daily
Writing down three things I am grateful for each day has become a grounding habit. Focusing on gratitude has helped me stay present and appreciate the little moments that bring joy. By revisiting those moments, I can relive the positive emotions that accompanied them, which has been transformative for my mindset.
• Action Step: Start a daily gratitude journal. Write down three things you are thankful for, but go deeper - recreate the emotions and sensations that came with those moments to truly appreciate them.
- Step outside your comfort zone
Fall is the perfect season to try something new. I have pushed myself to explore new hobbies, whether it is experimenting with recipes I haven’t had time to try or even taking up a new course. I have also signed up for a dance class as a way to meet new people and challenge myself.
Leaving your comfort zone is never easy, but when you do, you’ll often find yourself transformed for the better. Each time I have stepped outside of my comfort zone, I have come out the other side feeling proud of what I accomplished – it is like a positive loop. You push yourself, you grow, and then you’re motivated to do it again.
• Suggestion: Find a small way to stretch your limits - whether it is learning a new skill, starting a new project, or simply changing up your routine. Growth happens when we step outside our comfort zones.
- Nurture your relationships
With the change in seasons, I love reconnecting with friends who may have been away during the summer. Fall barbecues are common at our house, where we gather with loved ones as the weather cools down. It is the perfect time to rebuild connections and strengthen the support network around us.
Friends are an integral part of our support system, and nurturing these relationships gives us a solid foundation to lean on. In fact, one of my favorite things is going for a walk with a friend or tackling something new together – it is a great way to step outside the comfort zone with someone by your side.
• Tip: Plan a casual get-together with friends or family. These moments of connection are vital to our emotional well-being and can provide the encouragement we need to keep growing.

- Celebrate small wins and be patient
One of the most important lessons I have learned is that self-improvement takes time, and it is essential to celebrate even the smallest victories. I used to think I had to wait for a “perfect moment” – like a Monday or the start of a new year – to begin improving myself. But now I know the best time to start is now, and that consistency is what builds real change.
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is personal growth. Each small step, each habit, adds up over time, brick by brick, until you look back and realize how far you have come. And the sooner you start, the sooner you’ll see the results and notice the positive changes in your life.
• Final Tip: Focus on daily progress, no matter how small. Being consistent, even in the face of setbacks, is key. Celebrate every step forward, and remember that self-improvement is a journey, not a race.
This fall, as the leaves turn and the air cools, take the opportunity to refocus on yourself. Embrace the small changes that will lead to long-term growth, and be patient and kind to yourself along the way. Whether it is walking in the crisp autumn air, letting go of perfectionism, or challenging yourself to step out of your comfort zone, the best time to start is today.
Thanks for hanging out with me today!
See you next time.
