Sunday marked the official start of autumn, September 22nd, and the change in the air makes me reflect on everything that this season brings. Does autumn feel as special to you as it does to me? In the U.S., fall – also known as “autumn” in the U.K. – ushers in not only beautiful changes in nature but also meaningful traditions like Thanksgiving, where I find time to reflect on gratitude. Here are 13 reasons why autumn stands out as my favorite season and why it might become yours too.
- The colors of change
One of the most captivating aspects of autumn is the way nature transforms. When I lived in England, this was my favorite time to walk through the countryside, especially in areas like the Cotswolds. The vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows painted the landscape with such richness that I would always feel a sense of change and renewal. September was perfect for these walks before the cold settled in. Even here in Arizona, though the colors may not be as pronounced, I still feel the shift.

- A time to slow down
Summer is full of energy – vacations, long days, and constant motion. But autumn represents a slowdown. For me, this season is about pausing and recalibrating after the busyness of summer. I believe our bodies naturally crave this shift, preparing us for the cozy months ahead. Autumn feels like a fresh start – like the real beginning of the year, where I find myself setting new goals and launching new projects.
- The smell of roasting chestnuts
Growing up in Italy, the smell of roasted chestnuts immediately meant autumn to me. We would gather them in the countryside, then roast them on an open fire. Though I now live in Arizona, I still find ways to keep this tradition alive, roasting chestnuts in our backyard. That rich, smoky aroma brings me back to my roots every time.

- Cozy fireside moments
As the temperatures cool, especially in Arizona, I look forward to lighting fires in our backyard. Pietro and I gather wood, light the fire pit, and sit outside just enjoying the calm. The crackling of the fire and the cooler air – all create the perfect backdrop for reflection and relaxation. It’s one of the most soothing activities for me.
- Fall comfort foods
In Italy, autumn meant polenta, stews, and hearty meals to warm us up. But when I lived in England, I fully embraced slow-cooked meals like soups and Shepherd’s Pie. Autumn encourages me to switch up my cooking, using the slow cooker more often and bringing the comfort of warm, homemade meals into the home. These meals always make me feel connected to the season.

- Apple-based desserts
Autumn brings with it a bounty of apples, and with that, endless baking possibilities. One of my favorite fall recipes is Strudel, a traditional dessert from Trentino in northern Italy. Apples, raisins, cinnamon, and pine nuts wrapped in flaky pastry are the perfect fall treat. It is a ritual that ties me to my heritage and fills the house with the sweetest autumn aromas.
- Crisp, cool mornings
One of the small joys of fall is opening the windows to let the cool breeze in. Here in Arizona, the mornings and evenings are perfect for this. I love feeling the fresh air while sipping my coffee, especially after a hot summer. Whether I am walking our dog Blue in the early morning or taking a short evening stroll, these cooler days make me feel more connected to nature.
- Pumpkin traditions
In America, pumpkins are an iconic symbol of fall. Ever since we moved to England, we embraced the tradition of carving pumpkins for Halloween with the kids. Now, in the U.S., this tradition is even bigger! We always pick out the perfect pumpkins, plan our designs, and carve them together as a family. I love placing them outside with a candle inside, watching the warm glow light up the night – it is magical.

- Thanksgiving reflections
Thanksgiving, a uniquely American holiday, has become a time of gratitude for me. Spending the day with friends, enjoying delicious food, and reflecting on everything I am thankful for reminds me of how fortunate I am. It is a moment in the year to pause and think about the blessings in life – family, health, and the simple joys of everyday moments.
- Autumn festivities
Speaking of Halloween, autumn brings a whole host of seasonal celebrations. From pumpkin patches to Halloween trick-or-treating, this time of year is packed with activities. I’ll never forget when we first moved to England, dressing up the kids and taking them trick-or-treating. Now, in Arizona, it is a whole community event. We set up chairs in front of our house, lit the fire pit, and handed candy to the kids passing by. It is a beautiful blend of fun and family.

- Indoor activities for cozy nights
As the days get shorter, we spend more time indoors. Pietro and I love tackling 1,000-piece puzzles together while listening to music or just talking. These moments of calm and connection are what make autumn feel special. And with the kids, board games are always a hit – we have our favorites for family game nights that bring everyone together. Autumn nights often end with a good book, a soft light, and maybe even a candle burning – pure comfort.
- A bittersweet reflection on time
While I love everything about autumn, there is always a bittersweet feeling that comes with it. Watching the leaves fall and the days get shorter reminds me that time is passing. The year feels like it is rushing toward its end, and it makes me reflect on everything that has happened. Autumn always brings this sense of introspection for me, as I consider how quickly time moves.

- A birthday season
Finally, I love autumn because it is my birthday season! As the air cools and the leaves fall, I can’t help but feel a little excitement knowing that a special day is coming. It adds a personal touch to an already beautiful season, making autumn not just a time for reflection and coziness, but a time of celebration.
Autumn is a season full of change, reflection, and new beginnings. Whether it is the joy of roasting chestnuts, the warmth of a fireside evening, or the fun of family traditions like pumpkin carving, this season has so much to offer. I hope these reasons inspire you to embrace fall with the same enthusiasm and gratitude that I do. What are some of your favorite fall traditions?
Thanks for hanging out with me today!
See you next time.
