7 Steps to creating your vision board

The concept of a vision board isn’t new, but for me, it is personal. I have been crafting versions of these boards since I was a child, long before I knew there was a term for it. From the moment I could imagine my future, I would collect magazine clippings, powerful quotes, and images that spoke to what I wanted in life. I still have the folder I filled during my high school years, and every time I look at it, I am reminded of the dreams I had and how many of them have come true.

A vision board is more than just a visual representation of what you want – it is a tool that helps your mind connect with your goals and guide you toward them. But to me, it is also a source of inspiration, especially on those tough days when everything feels like it is falling apart, or when you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. It keeps your focus on what matters, even when life feels overwhelming.

1. How a vision board works on a deeper level

You know when you set a goal, like wanting to travel or start a new career, and the first thing your brain does is throw obstacles in the way? It is like, “How am I going to afford it?” or “Where will I find the time?” That is our mind playing tricks on us, always looking for the barriers before even trying to see the possibilities.

For me, this is where the vision board shines. When you look at the board, it bypasses all that mental clutter. Instead of worrying about “the how” your brain starts focusing on “the what“. It lets you visualize your dreams without all those immediate blocks. If I look at a picture of Italy, for instance, I am not thinking about how much it will cost me to get there. I am imagining myself walking through the streets, smelling the food, seeing the people. It is like my mind is already there, and that is a powerful shift.

2. Reflecting on what you want

Before you grab a stack of magazines or start pinning images on Pinterest, take a moment to think about what is missing in your life. Where do you want to see growth? Is it your relationships, health, finances, or career? Maybe it is something more personal, like your community or personal development. For me, this was crucial when I started creating vision boards. I’d think about where I was at that moment and what I wanted to bring into my life.

For example, I remember when I decided I wanted to move to America. At the time, it felt like an impossible dream, but the moment I focused on it, things started to shift. I asked myself, “What do I want my life to look like in America?” I wasn’t just thinking about the physical move, but about the experiences I wanted to have, the places I wanted to visit, and the life I envisioned for my family. The vision board became a space for that dream to grow.

3. Turning dreams into reality

Now comes the fun part – creating the board itself! When I make a vision board, I like to get a little old-school. I love cutting out images, handling the paper, and immersing myself in the process. There is something about physically touching the images and arranging them in a way that feels right that makes the experience more powerful. It is like I am already halfway there just by placing them on the board.

But I get it – this isn’t everyone’s style. Some people love digital boards, and those work just as well. You can make one on your phone or computer, save it as your screensaver, and look at it multiple times a day. Whatever method you choose, the important thing is that it resonates with you. Whether you use a bullet journal or an app, the key is to engage with it regularly.

4. Action steps

Here is where people often get stuck. A vision board is incredible for keeping you motivated, but if you are only staring at it and not taking action, it is just a collection of pretty pictures. You need to create an action board alongside it – or at least a list of steps that will help you get there.

For example, when we first started discussing the possibility of moving to America, it wasn’t entirely my decision. Pietro wasn’t fully ready to commit just yet, and we were still weighing the pros and cons as a family. But deep down, I knew this was the direction I wanted our future to take. So while we continued to talk it over, I quietly began working toward it. I didn’t just dream about it – I got to work. I made phone calls, researched schools for the kids, and planned out the logistics of our move. I even remember looking up the nearest IKEA – because after moving to a new country, I knew I’d need something familiar to rely on!

At that point, I was already mentally living in America. Each step I took – whether it was calling schools or mapping out neighborhoods – made the vision clearer and more achievable. Even though Pietro wasn’t completely on board yet, I didn’t force the decision. Instead, I focused on laying the groundwork, ensuring that when the time was right, everything would be in place.

That is the power of pairing a vision board with action. If your goal is to save for a trip to Italy, for instance, it is not enough to just pin photos of Rome or Venice. You need to figure out how much money you need, break it down into manageable steps, and start putting a plan in motion. Research flights, look into hotels, and create a savings plan. When you combine visualization with real, concrete actions, that is when the magic happens – when your dreams start turning into reality.

5. The importance of sending positive vibes into the universe

I have always believed in the power of sending positive energy into the universe. Creating a vision board is more than just goal-setting; it is about aligning your energy with what you want. When I think back to the time before we moved to America, I remember vividly how I started surrounding myself with images and thoughts of life there, even over a year before we made the move.

It wasn’t just about looking at pictures of where we’d live or the places we’d visit. It was about calling that dream into my life – seeing it as already happening. And I think that is why everything fell into place so seamlessly. The universe responds when you put that energy out there, and I have experienced this time and time again.

6. Looking back

It is funny, but every time I look at the folder I started in high school, filled with my hopes and dreams, I feel a sense of pride. Many of those things came true, and I am certain it is because I have always been someone who is not afraid to dream big and work for what I want.

The move to America wasn’t the first dream I manifested with a vision board, and it won’t be the last. Every time I set my sights on something, I get that same sense of excitement, that spark of possibility. And that is what a vision board does for me – it keeps me grounded in what I want, while also pushing me forward.

7. Bringing it all together

If you have never created a vision board, today’s a great day to start. Whether you prefer a hands-on approach like me or a digital one, the important thing is that you create something that inspires you. Take a few minutes to reflect on what is missing in your life, gather the images and words that speak to you, and start piecing together your vision.

But don’t stop there. Make a plan, write down the steps, and start acting on them. And remember to stay open to the magic that comes when you send your dreams out into the universe.

For me, vision boards aren’t just about visualizing – they are about creating a life that is full, vibrant, and intentional.

Thanks for hanging out with me today!

See you next time.
