A consistent nighttime routine is key to closing out your day and giving your mind and body the signal that it is time to relax. It provides stability, helping you achieve better sleep, which leads to a more productive and enjoyable day. Creating this sense of closure each night not only promotes relaxation but sets you up for a smoother tomorrow.
A nighttime routine serves also as a consistent practice that helps to lower stress, relax your body, and prepare your mind for sleep. When you follow the same set of activities every night around the same time, it becomes a ritual – one that tells your brain, “It is time to wind down.” Over time, these cues help you transition from a busy day to a peaceful night more easily. For me, especially as sleep has become trickier to achieve in one uninterrupted stretch, this routine has been a lifesaver.
Here is how I structure my evening to get a peaceful night’s sleep, especially now that I am navigating the challenges of premenopause.
1. Powering down electronics
One of the most important steps I have taken is turning off all electronics at least an hour before bed. The bright screens and endless social media scrolling keep my brain overstimulated, especially when I come across distressing news stories. This not only leaves me agitated but also makes it harder for me to fall asleep. By shutting down my devices, I allow my mind to begin the process of unwinding.
Blue light from screens can interfere with your melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep. By turning off electronics at least an hour before bed, you allow your body to naturally prepare for sleep, improving both the quality and duration of your rest.

2. The comfort of reading
Rather than falling asleep to the blue light of my phone or TV, I have shifted my focus to reading a book before bed. It helps me center myself, escape from the stress of the day, and let my imagination take over. As soon as I start losing track of sentences, I know it is time to close the book. I prefer paperbacks to avoid the glow of screens and use soft, warm lighting by my bedside, which adds to the relaxing atmosphere. This small shift has significantly improved how quickly and deeply I fall asleep.

3. A warm drink before bed: a childhood tradition
Drinking a warm beverage before bed can be a soothing part of any nighttime routine. Although I have had to limit my intake of liquids in the evening to avoid waking up for bathroom trips, the memory of chamomile tea with my grandmother remains special to me. I recall sitting with her at the kitchen table, sipping tea, laughing, and sharing jokes. It was such a comforting ritual. While I can’t drink tea right before bed now, I believe it is a lovely tradition to incorporate into your routine if you can. Herbal teas like chamomile or other calming infusions can be a great way to wind down before sleep.
4. Going to bed at a consistent time
Consistency is crucial for good sleep. I find that going to bed around the same time every night – typically between 10 and 10:30 PM – helps me get the best rest. Keeping a consistent bedtime trains your body’s internal clock, helping you fall asleep faster. Prepping for bed earlier in the evening makes it easier to stick to this routine, allowing me to sleep soundly through the night and wake up feeling refreshed.
5. Prepping the space: a tidy environment for a calm mind
Before I even begin my bedtime preparations, I ensure my kitchen and home are in order. While I know the next morning will inevitably reveal some mess (thanks to my kids grabbing a late-night snack), closing out the evening with a clean space helps my mind close out the day. For me, it is like tying a bow on the day’s events, signaling it is time to relax and rest.
6.Organizing for tomorrow
Another key step in my routine is making a list of things I need to accomplish the next day. This simple practice keeps my mind from racing with reminders in the middle of the night, only to forget them by morning. Taking five minutes to jot down tomorrow’s tasks allows me to relax, knowing that everything is under control. It’s a small action, but it has a big impact on my mental clarity and sleep quality.

7. Journaling for reflection and gratitude
Before bed, I also like to reflect on the day and write my thoughts. This might include writing about the events of the day, moments I am grateful for, or anything that caused me stress. It helps release the tension I may have accumulated, and if something is bothering me, I talk it over with Pietro. Sometimes, just discussing what is on my mind helps me let go of the stress and fall asleep more peacefully.
8. Preparing the bed
My bedtime ritual also includes preparing my bed in a very specific way. Every night, I pull back the comforter, remove the extra pillows, and dim the lights in the bedroom. I like to take off my watch, charge my phone, and close the blinds, performing these same steps each night. These actions serve as signals to my brain that it is time to sleep. This calming routine helps me transition into rest mode more easily.
9. Skincare and a warm rinse
Part of my bedtime ritual is skincare. Though I don’t wear much makeup, I have started applying retinol and eye cream to keep my skin hydrated. I also use the same cream around my lips and neck. Finally, I wash my body from the waist down with warm water, focusing especially on my feet, which makes me feel clean and comfortable before slipping into bed. While a bath sounds lovely, I usually avoid it because I fear the sudden chill afterward might wake me up too much.

10. Creating a relaxing atmosphere
I have also found that lighting plays a significant role in my ability to relax. I never use harsh, bright lights in the evening; instead, I have warm, soft lighting around the bedroom that creates a soothing atmosphere. I even have various points of warm light around the room to help me slow down and let go of the day. It’s all about creating an environment that encourages relaxation.
11. Lavender for relaxation
Another calming element I have incorporated is essential oils – specifically lavender and chamomile. I have a diffuser that fills the room with a subtle scent of lavender, which I find extremely calming. Sometimes, I even spray a little lavender oil between my pillow and Pietro’s. It creates just enough of a soothing scent to help me drift off without being overwhelming.
12. Soothing sounds
When I am feeling extra tense, I’ll ask Google to play some relaxing music. This soft background noise is my alternative to meditation. While meditation isn’t something I enjoy, the calming effect of music works wonders for me, helping to slow my brain down and ease me into sleep.
Everyone has their unique way of winding down, and the key to better sleep lies in creating a routine that makes you feel relaxed and comfortable. What works for one person may not work for another, so it is important to experiment and find the habits that best suit your lifestyle and needs. This is my nighttime routine, and it works well for me, helping me unwind and prepare for a restful night. I encourage you to explore different practices and build a routine that helps you relax and recharge in a way that feels right for you.
Thanks for hanging out with me today!
See you next time.
Valentina
