8 Simple ways to became a more positive person

Shifting to a positive mindset wasn’t something that happened overnight. For a long time, I would dwell on things I couldn’t change. But over time, I learned that accepting certain things as they are while actively changing others is key to leading a more positive life.

In this post, I want to share how I have embraced positivity and why I believe it is a healthy way to face life’s ups and downs.

1. Understanding what you can and can not change

There is a fine balance between accepting the things you can not change and working on the ones you can. This was a crucial lesson for me. Once I realized that certain situations were beyond my control, it became easier to focus my energy on the things I could improve. This shift in perspective allowed me to see challenges as opportunities to grow rather than obstacles that keep me stuck.

My thoughts:

Being positive doesn’t mean ignoring the bad things in life. It means acknowledging them but choosing to focus on solutions, growth, and learning. It is about accepting that while life isn’t perfect, it is still worth making the best of it.

2. Embracing negative emotions without letting them take over

For a long time, I avoided feelings like sadness and frustration because I thought they were counterproductive. But I eventually learned that these emotions are part of life and should be embraced rather than suppressed. My experience in therapy helped me understand the importance of sitting with these feelings instead of running from them.

My thoughts:

To me, being positive in a healthy way means facing these emotions head-on and still choosing to find the good in life. It is about balance – allowing yourself to feel sadness but not letting it define your overall outlook.

3. The power of smiling

Smiling is one of the simplest things we can do to spread positivity, not only to others but also to ourselves. When I smile at someone on the street, I feel an immediate shift in my energy, and I like to believe that it lifts their spirits too. It is a small act, but it has a big impact.

My thoughts:

Smiling isn’t about pretending everything is fine. For me, it is a reminder to be kind to myself and others. It’s a way to produce more endorphins – the hormones of happiness – and to create a positive ripple effect around me.

4. Self-acceptance as the foundation for positivity

This was probably the hardest part of my journey. To truly embrace positivity, you need to like yourself, at least in part. Learning to appreciate certain aspects of my personality and physical appearance gave me the confidence to believe I deserve a happy, fulfilling life.

My thoughts:

If we don’t think we deserve happiness, it is hard to be positive. Self-acceptance allows us to remove the mental barriers that limit our positivity. It is an ongoing process, but it is essential for personal growth and overall well-being.

5. The importance of gratitude

Keeping a gratitude journal has been a game-changer for me. It is not about huge, life-changing events. It is about the small things that make life enjoyable – like a good night’s sleep or the sound of birds singing in the morning. Noticing these little things helps shift your focus from what is wrong in life to what is right.

My thoughts:

Gratitude has opened my eyes to the beauty that already exists in my life. It is easy to overlook small blessings, but being mindful of them keeps me grounded and focused on the positive aspects of my day-to-day life.

6. Letting go of the past

Dwelling on the past only drags us down. I have come to believe that if something from the past can be changed, great – but if not, there is no point in obsessing over it. We can only move forward if we let go of what’s behind us.

My thoughts:

This isn’t always easy, but I have learned to work through the things I can change and leave the rest behind. The past is a learning tool, not a burden to carry. Once you accept this, you can focus on the present and create a better future.

7. Listening to your body and mind

Part of maintaining a positive outlook is understanding when a situation isn’t good for you. Paying attention to how I feel, physically and emotionally helps me make better decisions and avoid negativity. Whether it is a toxic environment or unhealthy habits, learning to notice and address these signs is key to staying positive.

My thoughts:

Positivity comes from knowing yourself and recognizing when it is time to make a change. It is not about ignoring the negative, but about working through it and making choices that support your well-being.

8. Being kind to yourself and others

Self-talk plays a huge role in how we see the world. Negative self-talk creates mental barriers that stop us from being happy. I have found that being kind to myself is just as important as being kind to others. We all have flaws, but if we can’t show ourselves compassion, how can we expect others to?

My thoughts:

Kindness starts from within. By practicing self-compassion, I have become more resilient, and that has allowed me to spread positivity to others in a more authentic way. It is all about treating yourself with the same understanding and patience that you would offer to someone else.

Becoming a positive person is a lifelong journey. It is about making small changes in your mindset and daily habits that eventually lead to a more fulfilling, peaceful life. While it is not always easy, it is worth the effort to focus on the good, let go of the bad, and embrace the present with gratitude and kindness.

Thanks for hanging out with me today!

See you next time.
