9 Tips for making daily walks a lasting habit

Getting into a daily walking routine can feel more natural and sustainable than traditional workouts at the gym. For years, I committed to hours at the gym, pushing through that heavy “first-day-back” feeling after every break or holiday. Walking doesn’t have that same barrier for me – it feels innate, freeing, and almost effortless.

Here is how I have managed to make walking a consistent, enjoyable part of my life, even amid Arizona’s extreme heat, and why I think it is a habit anyone can build and enjoy.

1. Schedule it like an appointment

One of the simplest yet most effective ways I stay consistent is by scheduling my walks. I block out 30 to 45 minutes on my calendar every weekday, either in the morning or afternoon depending on my day. Just seeing it written down, like any other commitment, keeps me from making excuses. This habit has turned my walk into a non-negotiable part of my day. If you want to start walking more, try setting aside a specific time and marking it in your planner or calendar – making it feel just as important as any other task.

2. Pick the perfect time

Choosing a set time can create a rhythm in your routine. I often walk around 6:50 AM, but the afternoon time varies depending on the sunset. In the Arizona winter, I head out around 5 PM, but in summer, it is simply too hot to go out after dawn. In places with extreme weather, it is crucial to adjust to avoid the hottest hours. For those new to walking, find a time when you’ll have the least interruptions, and stick to it for a week to see how it fits your day.

3. Partner up for motivation

A walking buddy can make all the difference, especially in the beginning. It helps with accountability, adds a social aspect, and makes the time pass more quickly. I sometimes walk with our dog, Blue, who may get distracted sniffing around but still keeps me moving. Whether it’s a friend, partner, or pet, having someone to walk with can keep you motivated. Just remember that if they can’t join, the walk should still happen – no skipping!

4. Add interest with music, podcasts, or audiobooks

To keep walks engaging, I mix them up with music, podcasts, or audiobooks. Just be cautious with noise-canceling headphones if you are near traffic or in busy areas; it is easy to miss the sounds around you, especially with quiet electric cars. Having something to listen to adds a layer of enjoyment and helps the time fly by. For those who find walking repetitive, a good playlist or podcast might make all the difference.

5. Change up your route regularly

Routine can get boring over time, so I make it a point to have a few different routes and alternate them. This variety keeps the scenery fresh and makes each walk feel a bit more exciting. If you are walking the same path daily, consider exploring a new neighborhood or route occasionally. Not only does it help avoid monotony, but it is also a great way to discover hidden gems in your area.

6. Engage with your surroundings

Walking offers a chance to be fully present, using all five senses to connect with your environment. I enjoy observing nature, noticing small details, listening to the sounds, and taking in the surroundings. If you tend to zone out, try bringing awareness to what you see, hear, and feel. Even a simple walk can become a mindfulness practice if you focus on staying present.

7. Start small and build gradually

One of the biggest mistakes when starting any new habit is going too hard too soon. Walking is no different. It is easy to think, “I’ll walk 45 minutes every day,” only to feel burned out after a few days. Instead, start with 15 minutes for the first week and gradually add time as you feel comfortable. Building up slowly will make it more sustainable and prevent you from feeling overwhelmed.

8. Try a challenge for extra motivation

I love setting small challenges for myself to keep things interesting. Apps that track steps, distance, or time can make it easy to set and reach new goals. You can start by aiming for a certain number of steps or miles each day, then track your progress. For me, recording my steps and distance in my journal has helped me see improvements over time. Whether you want to hit 10,000 steps a day or simply increase each week, challenges add a fun layer to your walking habit.

9. Aim for 10,000 steps daily

The 10,000 steps goal isn’t just a marketing number – it is a tangible, attainable way to build activity into your day. Walking this much equates to about 8 km, and it is easier to achieve than it sounds. By leaving the car slightly farther away, walking the kids to school, or adding a quick 20-minute walk after lunch, you’ll find the steps add up. For anyone starting a walking habit, this goal can provide structure without feeling too rigid.

Some people indeed find walking repetitive, but with a little creativity, it can become a highlight of your day. The tips I have shared – like changing routes, listening to engaging content, and using the walk to connect with nature – make it less of a chore and more of an experience. Walking is a simple, accessible way to stay active, and it doesn’t require expensive gym memberships or equipment. With the right mindset, it can easily become something you look forward to, a moment of relaxation and a natural way to unwind.

Incorporating daily walks can be simple and enriching. Whether you are starting small or aiming for 10,000 steps, walking offers a chance to move, reflect, and connect with yourself and the world around you. Start with a goal that suits your lifestyle, try some of these tips, and see how a daily walk can add value to your day.
