15 ways to embrace change and find balance

For a long time, I struggled to find a balance that made me feel at peace with myself and those around me. There was always an inner battle, a drive to be more, do more, and ultimately feel like I was never enough. Over time, I have learned that some things are perfectly fine just as they are.

This realization didn’t come overnight, but through moments of reflection and self-awareness, I began to see how I could improve an already good life by focusing on what truly matters to me.

Here are the lessons I have embraced and hope to carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. Change is a constant companion

Looking back, my life has been shaped by change – big and small. In recent years, I have watched my daughter, Elisa, go to college and my son, Marco, transition into his teenage years. These moments are a reminder that change is natural, inevitable, and often transformative.

What I have learned is to pause when life shifts. Reflection is crucial. I give myself time to understand what is happening, how I feel about it, and what I might need to adjust internally. Resisting change only creates friction; instead, I try to realign my goals and focus my energy on the new direction life is taking.

2. The best time to start is now

How often have we told ourselves, “I’ll start on Monday,” or “Next year will be my year”? The truth is, there is no perfect time to start something new. The only moment we truly have is the one we are living in now.

When I feel the urge to change or improve, I act on it immediately. The passion and drive I feel in that moment are my fuel to create lasting habits. Waiting only dilutes that energy and keeps me stuck.

3. Anticipating change instead of waiting for it

Sometimes, we wait for life to push us in a new direction when we can take the first step ourselves. I have realized that anticipating my needs – both practical and emotional – allows me to adapt before life forces me to. Being proactive, rather than reactive, has been a game-changer for my mindset.

4. Take control of your story

Words like “should” or “maybe later” no longer hold power over me. If I want something to change, I act on it. Giving others or external circumstances control over my life only robs me of the strength I need to grow.

We are the architects of our lives, and when we stop waiting for permission or the “perfect” moment, we gain the freedom to shape our paths.

5. The power of habits and routine

For someone who once thrived on spontaneity, I have come to appreciate the grounding nature of habits and routines. They create stability in an unpredictable world. While life is full of surprises, having a solid foundation of simple, daily rituals allows me to approach challenges with a clearer mind and more energy.

6. Adding color to life

A few years ago, my wardrobe was a sea of black. It felt safe and sophisticated, but it wasn’t until a friend pointed it out that I realized how limiting it was. She suggested I try wearing color, and I have never looked back.

Now, my closet is full of vibrant blues, cheerful pinks, and calming greens. Dressing in color brings me joy, and I often choose shades that reflect my mood or set the tone for my day. It is a small change that has had a surprisingly big impact on my happiness.

7. Self-acceptance is the key to growth

I spent years fighting an internal battle with myself – judging my weaknesses, suppressing my chaos, and trying to be someone I wasn’t. Therapy helped me break free from that cycle. By facing my flaws head-on and accepting them as part of who I am, I began to grow in ways I never thought possible.

The process hasn’t been easy, but it is been worth it. Self-acceptance isn’t about settling; it is about creating a foundation for change rooted in kindness and understanding.

8. The importance of genuine friendships

As I have grown, I have become more selective about the people I surround myself with. True friends are those who support you, stand by you against the world, and still dare to be honest with you when you need it.

These relationships are vital. They provide a safe space to share, reflect, and grow without fear of judgment. Having friends like this has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my journey.

9. Curiosity fuels growth

I have always been curious – a trait I have come to cherish. Learning new things keeps my mind sharp and my spirit energized. Whether it is diving into a new skill, exploring a different culture, or simply asking questions, curiosity is the fuel that keeps me moving forward.

10. Growth happens outside your comfort zone

Every time I have stepped outside my comfort zone, I have gained more than I have lost. The challenges may be intimidating, but they’re always worth it. Being uncomfortable is a sign that I’m growing, learning, and becoming a better version of myself.

11. Don’t wait for the “right” time

When we moved to England and later to America, there were a thousand reasons we could have waited. But waiting often means missing out on opportunities. Preparation is essential, but overthinking and delaying action only hold us back.

12. Embrace all emotions

In my younger years, I avoided sadness like the plague. It felt like a weakness – something to bury and ignore. Now, I see sadness as just as valid and important as joy. Accepting and working through my emotions has allowed me to be more authentic and connected to myself.

13. Therapy Is a gift

Investing in therapy was one of the best decisions I ever made. It is not just for moments of crisis; it is a tool for understanding yourself, gaining clarity, and moving forward. There is still a stigma around seeking help, but I believe therapy is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves.

14. Find joy in the little things

Happiness doesn’t always come from grand gestures or big achievements. Often, it is found in the small moments – a kind word, a simple gesture, or a quiet moment of gratitude. Recognizing and cherishing these moments has brought a deeper sense of contentment to my life.

15. Peace comes from within

For years, I chased more – more excitement, more adventure, more of everything. But now, I see the beauty in stability. Finding peace in where I am, without constantly searching for the next big thing, has been one of the most liberating lessons of my life.

These lessons are my guideposts as I move forward. Life will continue to evolve, and so will I, but with these principles in mind, I feel ready to embrace whatever comes next.

Thanks for hanging out with me today!

See you next time.
