Labor Day celebrations

Yesterday was Labor Day, and we spent it in a way that was both productive and relaxing. The morning began with some tidying up around the house. Pietro helped me out, and then he spent some quality time with Marco, building Lego creations together. It was a calm start to what promised to be a lively afternoon.

The joy of cooking ragù

One of my favorite recipes to make is ragù. There is something deeply satisfying about cooking this traditional Italian dish. As I chop the vegetables and stir the sauce, my mind drifts to various thoughts: how I want to arrange the kitchen for when guests arrive, the little tasks I need to tackle in the coming days, and sometimes even just enjoying the simple act of cooking itself. I find that music is a great companion in the kitchen. Depending on my mood, I might choose soft guitar melodies for a reflective atmosphere or upbeat tunes from my eclectic playlist to keep the energy high. Cooking is more than just a chore; it is a form of self-expression and relaxation for me.

Hosting friends

By early afternoon, our guests arrived

The parents of one of Marco’s friends. Their son has been a part of Marco’s life since we moved to Arizona seven years ago, back in third grade. (As I mentioned in a previous post, I have started meeting up with the boy’s mom every Friday for coffee and a chat for the past few months.) I was confident that inviting their family over would lead to a great day filled with laughter and meaningful conversations.

When hosting, I always like to prepare an appetizer spread on the kitchen island. It is a practical way to ensure that everyone has easy access to snacks and can mingle freely. Yesterday, I kept it simple with a charcuterie board of cured meats, cheeses, pickled vegetables, and chips. The guests arrived around 3 PM, and with dinner planned for a few hours later, this light spread was just right. We sat around, chatting and catching up. Our daughters are both in university and are around the same age, while our sons are the same age and spend a lot of time together. It was refreshing to discuss parenting challenges and joys with others who share similar experiences.

Cultural conversations and culinary traditions

As we enjoyed our appetizers, the conversation naturally flowed into the topic of food. We delved into a lively discussion about our culinary traditions, both Italian and Puerto Rican. It was fascinating to compare the nuances of our respective cuisines. We shared stories about our favorite recipes and how we incorporate traditional foods into our daily lives.

For us, cooking isn’t just about preparing meals; it is a way to connect with our heritage and share a piece of our culture with others. We talked about how we try to introduce these traditions to our families, making them a part of our everyday routines. For example, we often cook Italian meals like fresh pasta, gnocchi, ravioli, and tiramisù, not only during special occasions but also as a way to bring a taste of home to our regular dinners. It is our way of keeping our cultural roots alive, even in a new country.

Similarly, our friends shared their experiences with Puerto Rican cuisine. We talked about how they incorporate traditional dishes into their meals. It was enlightening to see the similarities and differences in our approaches to food, and it reminded me of the beauty of cultural exchange through cooking.

An Italian dinner

As the conversation flowed, Pietro began making fresh tagliatelle, a tradition that always adds a special touch to our gatherings. Cooking Italian food from scratch is a cherished practice in our home. It is not just about the meal itself; it is about sharing a slice of our cultural heritage. The process of making tagliatelle turns cooking into an art form. There is a certain joy in watching the transformation from flour and eggs into pasta, and it becomes an integral part of the experience we share with our guests.

The ragù added a rich and inviting aroma to the kitchen. The slow-cooking process allows the flavors to develop deeply, creating a sauce that is both comforting and flavorful. It is a reminder of the care and attention we put into our cooking, and it is always rewarding to see our guests enjoy it.

For dessert, Pietro made his signature tiramisù. Each layer of the dessert, from the espresso-soaked ladyfingers to the creamy mascarpone mixture, was carefully prepared. It is a classic Italian treat that never fails to impress. Watching our guests’ reactions as they took their first bites of tiramisù was a highlight of the meal.

A day well spent

The afternoon flew by, and before we knew it, six hours had passed in what felt like the blink of an eye. It was a day filled with delicious food, engaging conversations, and the warmth of good company. Although Elisa wasn’t there, she was busy with her sororities, eagerly awaiting news about which house she’d been accepted into, and we still felt her excitement through our phone conversations. She was thrilled to be accepted into the house she had chosen, which only added to the joy of the day.

Reflecting on the day, I am reminded of how much I love hosting and cooking for others. It is not merely about preparing food; it is about creating an experience, fostering connections, and sharing a piece of our lives with those around us. It is about turning ordinary moments into something memorable, and yesterday was a perfect example of that.

Thanks for hanging out with me today!

Se you next time!
