As I reflect on my life, I like to think of it as a book, with each year representing a chapter and every month a subsection of that chapter. When the last day of the month arrives, it feels like closing a small chapter in this vast book of life. It is a pause, a moment to stop, reflect, and appreciate all that has happened, much like putting a flag in the ground to mark important milestones. These moments of closure remind me that while life keeps moving, I have the power to stop and recognize the significance of the little things.
Time moves fast – sometimes too fast. And while it is a bit of a cliché, it is true. Life often feels like it is slipping through our fingers, especially when we are busy juggling responsibilities, work, family, and all the other parts of daily life. But I have learned that putting down markers at the end of each month helps me slow down, reflect, and feel where I am. It also helps me ensure that I am not simply drifting along but instead moving with intention.
For me, it is easy to track my life by the places I have lived because each move has been a reset, a fresh start. These moves have been my time markers. But even when life feels more settled, it is important to take a moment to review, reflect, and be thankful. Doing this monthly helps me capture the small moments that might otherwise be forgotten in the rush of life. Even in seasons of stability, changes are happening within us that deserve recognition.
Here is what I do at the end of every month to “close the chapter,” find my footing, and move forward with intention.

- Monthly review
The first thing I do is a review of the month. This helps me assess whether I have reached the goals I set for myself at the beginning. I find journaling to be the best way to work through this process. At the end of every month, I dedicate a few pages to reflecting on the goals I set and whether I met them. For each goal, I ask myself: “Did I reach it? If not, Why? Do I need more time, or should I adjust my approach?” This reflection isn’t just a practical exercise – it is deeply personal. It gives me a chance to better understand my motivations and progress.
I have found that this reflection is key to my growth. Simply crossing off a goal or rewriting it for the next month without thinking about why I didn’t reach it doesn’t serve me. I need to dive deeper and understand what I can improve. This way, I hold myself accountable, and over time, I have become more persistent and focused. Reviewing my goals this way also reminds me that success isn’t always linear, and that is okay. Sometimes, the learning process is more valuable than ticking off a box.
I used to get frustrated if I didn’t meet one of my goals – especially the small ones, like reading two books a month. But now I have learned to be kinder to myself. If I didn’t read two books, maybe I spent that time doing something else valuable, like deepening my relationship with my kids or taking much-needed rest. I remind myself that progress comes in many forms, and sometimes goals shift because life demands it. This shift in mindset has allowed me to approach my goals with more grace and flexibility.
2. Planning for the next month
After reflecting on the past month, I turn to the future. I start planning for the month ahead, writing down new goals. Sometimes these goals connect with plans, like starting to shop for Christmas gifts in October, or they might be more personal, like spending more time with my kids. Each goal I set is carefully considered, ensuring it aligns with my broader values and intentions. This way, the goals are meaningful and not just tasks I feel obligated to complete.
What is crucial for me is that every goal has a clear reason behind it. When I write down a goal, I also note why it is important to me. This helps me stay focused and feel more responsible for reaching it. Without a strong reason behind a goal, it is easy to let it slip away when life gets busy. But when I understand the “why,” it gives me the push to keep going, even when things get tough or I feel unmotivated. The purpose behind each goal serves as a reminder of why I started and what I am working towards.
For example, if one of my goals is to make more time for myself in the coming month, I’ll write down the reason behind it – maybe I need to recharge, or I have been feeling burnt out lately. By understanding why it is necessary, I am more likely to prioritize it, instead of brushing it aside when the demands of life pile up. Each goal, no matter how small, carries significance when it is tied to a deeper purpose.

3. Reflecting on challenges
Another important part of my end-of-month routine is reflecting on any challenges I faced. Were there difficult moments that drained my energy or left me feeling unprepared? I find that writing about these moments helps me process them. By putting them down on paper I feel like I am closing the door on any negativity they brought into my life. It is my way of moving forward without carrying unnecessary baggage into the next month.
Writing it out helps me leave those tough moments behind as I move into the new month. It is my way of saying, “This chapter is done. Time to move forward.” Processing those moments allows me to learn from them without letting them linger. It helps me build resilience and reminds me that challenges, while hard, are also growth opportunities. By consciously letting go, I permit myself to move into the new month with a lighter heart and a clearer mind.
4. Filling in the calendar
At the end of each month, I also update my calendar for the month ahead. I fill it in with things I already know I’ll be doing – whether it is weekly lunches with Elisa at college or appointments I have scheduled. This gives me a clear overview of what the next month looks like and allows me to visualize the rhythm of my days before they unfold. It is a simple practice, but it makes a world of difference in how I approach the month.
Of course, my calendar will fill up as the days go by, but having an initial sense of what is coming helps me feel more prepared. Knowing what to expect, even in broad strokes, means I can mentally brace for busy periods and approach them with a clearer, more focused mindset. It is a way to manage the chaos before it starts and helps me stay grounded amidst life’s unpredictability.

5. Gratitude
Last but not least, I take time to express gratitude for the good things that happened during the month. I make a list of the happy moments and the highlights, no matter how small they seem. Reflecting on these positive experiences lifts my mood and helps me approach life with more joy and appreciation. Even in the busiest of months, there are always moments worth celebrating. The key is to take the time to notice them.

Often, we forget the good moments because we get so caught up in the grind of daily life. But keeping track of these little wins – whether it is a meaningful conversation with a friend, a day spent outdoors with the kids, or simply a moment of peace – helps me stay grounded and positive. And when I look back at the end of the year, I have a collection of beautiful memories to cherish. These are the moments that fuel my spirit and remind me of what truly matters.
The end of the month is a time to pause, reflect, and be intentional about the path ahead. Taking time to review, plan, and express gratitude helps me stay focused and happy. It keeps me from feeling like life is racing by and gives me the chance to savor the journey. I hope sharing this helps you find your way of closing each chapter in your life’s book.
Thanks for hanging out with me today!
See you next time.
