10 Steps to simplify your life before 2025

As we move closer to a new year, many of us think about how we can live a simpler, happier life. Life can sometimes feel overwhelming, but I believe that taking small, purposeful steps towards the life you want makes a big difference. Each step brings us closer to peace of mind, helping to reduce anxiety and create a clearer, more fulfilling daily routine.

Here are ten practical actions I have found helpful in my journey to a simpler, calmer life. Try incorporating a few of these ideas to see what works best for you!

1. Clear your mind with a “brain dump”

One of my go-to strategies when I feel overwhelmed by thoughts is to grab a piece of paper and write everything down in individual boxes, like a checklist. I jot down each thought, task, or idea that comes to mind. This process helps me empty my head, prioritize what’s important, and clarify my goals. There is something so satisfying about ticking off each completed task. This simple exercise brings me instant relief, allowing me to focus more effectively and with a sense of calm.

2. Organize your photos

Recently, my husband Pietro and I organized our photos onto two separate hard drives as a backup. We sorted everything by year, then by date, noting any special events. Now, we clear our phone storage once a month by moving photos to these hard drives. This setup makes it easy to find specific memories, and with everything organized, our devices feel much less cluttered. It took Pietro a while to arrange everything from 2001 to the present, but now we have a reliable system in place that lets us enjoy our memories without digital chaos.

3. Establish morning and evening routines

Routine has been a lifesaver in simplifying my day-to-day life. My morning and evening routines ensure that daily tasks run smoothly, without much thought or planning. These routines help me start and end the day calmly, reducing stress. I also keep personal routines, like journaling or list-making, to help process my thoughts and reflect. Creating small routines for daily and weekly tasks can create a strong foundation that keeps things moving effortlessly.

4. Weekly meal planning

Meal planning has become one of my favorite ways to simplify my week. I usually create a monthly meal outline, breaking it down into weekly plans and adjusting as needed. Every weekend, Pietro and I shop for all the ingredients we’ll need for the week. This way, we make one trip to the store and have everything ready, saving time and decision fatigue during busy weekdays. Sometimes, I batch-cook meals to have food ready for a few days, making it even easier.

5. Keep a cleaning schedule

To avoid the stress of unexpected chores, I have a cleaning schedule for both daily tasks and less frequent ones, like changing air filters or deep-cleaning the fridge. I mark these on my calendar so they don’t slip my mind. This helps me avoid the pressure of last-minute cleaning and ensures our home stays comfortable. Keeping a long-term cleaning list lets me know when something is due, so I can tackle it and move on, worry-free.

6. Write a monthly to-do list

At the beginning of each month, I create a general to-do list with any important tasks, like booking appointments or checking deadlines. This master list becomes my guide, and I add to it as the month progresses. Having everything in one place makes it easy to track what I need to accomplish, and I enjoy crossing items off as they are completed. This list helps keep life organized without feeling overwhelming.

7. Use a planner to prioritize

Using a planner allows me to prioritize the most important tasks, reducing wasted time and mental clutter. Knowing what needs to be done each week and month gives me peace of mind and keeps me from over committing. A planner gives me a bird’s-eye view of my commitments and helps me approach each day with intention.

8. Let go of what no longer serves you

One of the most powerful ways to simplify life is to remove what doesn’t make you feel good. Over time, I have learned to identify things that drain my energy and let them go, creating space for what truly matters. Once you recognize what isn’t serving you, taking steps to phase it out of your life can be incredibly freeing. It is a way to lighten your load and make room for a more positive, fulfilling life.

9. Avoid “what-if” worrying

I try to make decisions based on the present rather than letting “what if” scenarios take over. While some planning is good, overthinking every possible outcome can lead to anxiety. Instead, I focus on responding to what is actually happening, adjusting as needed. By dealing with things as they come, I have found I can be more relaxed and handle challenges with a clearer mind.

10. Embrace activities you enjoy

Lastly, filling life with activities that bring joy makes everything feel lighter. It is not always possible to only do things we love, but balancing responsibilities with enjoyable activities makes life more meaningful. I try to prioritize moments that fill me with happiness and help me recharge. Doing things you genuinely enjoy, as much as possible, adds a bit of lightness and helps you maintain balance.

Simplifying your life doesn’t mean doing everything on this list – just start with a few things that resonate. The idea is to reduce the mental clutter and create a smoother routine, so you have more time and space for what truly matters. Before long, you may find that small steps bring a lot of calm, helping you enjoy life with less stress and more purpose.
