Books vs e-books

Books vs e-books

In our household, there is an even split when it comes to the great debate: books or e-books?

Pietro and Marco are firmly in the e-books camp – logical, tech-savvy, and always weighing costs versus benefits. For them, the choice is clear.

Elisa and I, on the other hand, are die-hard book lovers. Sure, e-books have advantages, but for us, there is something irreplaceable about the experience of holding a physical book.

Let’s dive into this family divide and explore both sides of the debate!

The joy of physical books

There is something magical about the feel of a book in your hands, right? Flipping through the pages, underlining passages, scribbling notes in the margins – it is all part of the experience for Elisa and me. Watching the stack of pages in your right hand grow as the left-hand side shrinks is such a satisfying visual reminder of progress.

Then there is the aesthetic. The smell of paper, the texture of the cover, and the unique designs on the spine. Books are more than just words; they are objects of beauty that add character to a home. My bookshelves are filled with stories that have traveled with me – literally. When we moved, I packed up box after box of books, even knowing they’d take up precious space in our new home. And yet, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Why e-book win for Pietro and Marco

Pietro is a minimalist through and through, so it is no surprise he champions e-books. No clutter, no heavy shelves, and no dusting. For him, the space-saving aspect of an e-book is priceless. Marco, following in his dad’s footsteps, appreciates the practicality of having an entire library in his pocket.

Cost is another factor. Digital books are generally cheaper than their physical counterparts. Plus, with subscriptions like Kindle Unlimited, you get access to a massive selection for a flat fee. The only downside? You don’t truly own the books. If you cancel your subscription, the books disappear – a stark contrast to the permanence of a well-loved paperback.

Convenience is where e-books really shine. Pietro loves the instant access: a book is just one click away, and no trip to the store or library is required. For busy schedules, this is a game-changer. And let’s talk about versatility: you can adjust font sizes, switch between devices, and even read in the dark without disturbing anyone.

Privacy is another bonus. With e-books, no one can judge you by your cover – literally! Whether you are indulging in a guilty pleasure or diving into a niche topic, your reading choices stay your own.

The role of books in childhood

When my kids were little, books were a constant companion. In England, where children learn to read at four, Elisa and Marco developed a love for reading early on. Their books were like security blankets – always in hand, whether we were at the doctor’s office, on a road trip, or tucking in for bedtime.

I am proud of the reading rituals we created as a family. When they were small, we’d read together every night. It wasn’t just about the stories; it was about the connection. I can still picture their tiny hands flipping through picture books, their eyes lighting up at colorful illustrations.

I worry that the rise of e-books might diminish this tactile, bonding experience for future generations. Sure, digital books for kids exist, but they don’t offer the same sensory engagement. There is something special about a child holding a book, turning its pages, and discovering the joy of reading in a tangible way.

Books in education

When it comes to schoolbooks, I am firmly a team paper. For me, nothing beats being able to flip back and forth, annotate with sticky notes, and highlight important sections. It feels more active and engaging.

My kids, however, are part of the digital-first generation. In the U.S., their schools provide laptops, and nearly all their textbooks are online. The only physical book they have is for math. While this approach reduces the weight of backpacks and is undoubtedly cost-effective, it makes me a little sad. I can’t help but feel we are losing something important in the shift away from physical books in education.

Travel and the practical side of e-books

I’ll admit, that e-books have a clear edge when it comes to travel. On long trips, you can carry an entire library without taking up space in your bag. Switching between books mid-journey is effortless, and you don’t have to worry about weight limits or running out of reading material.

That said, I still find myself browsing airport bookstores, picking up a book just because the cover caught my eye. There is a certain romance to traveling with a paperback, even if it is less practical.

The future of reading

When e-books first came onto the scene, I resisted with all my might. I remember doing the same with digital cameras – it took me ages to switch from film. But, as with all technology, I eventually saw the advantages.

A few Christmases ago, Pietro gave me a Kindle. At first, I didn’t touch it. I kept buying physical books, stubbornly clinging to the familiar. But slowly, I started to use it, and I can now admit that e-books have their place in my life. They are convenient, accessible, and perfect for certain situations.

Even so, I can’t imagine a world where physical books disappear entirely. They are too deeply intertwined with our lives, memories, and stories.

Our family’s reading landscape

In our home, the debate between books and e-books isn’t about which is better – it is about what suits each of us. Pietro and Marco value efficiency, minimalism, and practicality, making e-books their go-to choice. Elisa and I, on the other hand, are drawn to the sensory and emotional experience of physical books.

Maybe that is the beauty of reading: it is deeply personal, with no right or wrong answer. Whether you are swiping on a screen or flipping through pages, the magic of a good story remains the same.

Thank you for spending time with me today!

See you next time.
