Walking is a simple activity, yet it holds a multitude of meanings for me. Whether I’m walking alone or with company, each experience offers something unique.
Over the years, I have come to appreciate both walking alone and walking with others. However, I must admit that I spend most of my time – about 70% – walking in solitude. Of course, this doesn’t include my loyal companion, Blue, my dog. He has changed my walking routine in ways I never expected.
In this post, I will share my thoughts on the joys of walking alone and with company, highlighting why both experiences hold a special place in my heart.
Walking solo
Walking alone is like entering a personal sanctuary. There are no preparations and no expectations – just me and my thoughts.
Here’s why I cherish these solo walks:
1. A chance to connect with my thoughts
Walking alone helps me sort through the chaos in my mind. It is my time to mentally organize my day, plan future projects, or reflect on things I might have overlooked.
Taking a quiet walk can provide remarkable clarity. During these moments, I find myself rehearsing important conversations or brainstorming fresh blog ideas, unlocking creativity I didn’t know I had.
2. Freedom to choose
When I walk alone, there is no need to coordinate plans or set a time. If I feel like heading out, I just grab my shoes, leash up Blue, and go. It is spontaneous, natural, and liberating.
The flexibility to decide the route and duration without consulting anyone makes solo walks feel like a little rebellion against the structure.
3. Podcasts and music just for me
Walking solo gives me the chance to listen to my favorite podcasts or playlists – those that nobody else in my family finds interesting. I pop in one earbud (always one; safety first!) and immerse myself in stories, ideas, or music that speak directly to me. It feels like having a private moment of indulgence.

4. Meditation in motion
Walking feels like a moving meditation to me. The rhythmic sound of my steps on the pavement, the fresh air filling my lungs, and the steady pace help calm my mind. Even if I set out feeling stressed, by the time I return home, I am lighter both mentally and emotionally.
5. Familiar routes mean fewer surprises
I prefer to paved paths or local parks when I walk alone. There is comfort in knowing the terrain, and it keeps things simple.
I am not a fan of hiking solo; I prefer to leave those adventures for when I have company. Instead, my solo walks are predictable and peaceful, a welcome break from life’s unpredictability.

Walking in company
On the other hand, walking with others – be it my husband Pietro, my children, or even friends – brings a completely different kind of joy.
1. Deep conversations and bonding
Walking creates an effortless flow in conversations. Whether Pietro and I are discussing our plans, reminiscing about the past, or my children are sharing their latest stories, these walks allow for deeper connections.
Of course, I am usually the one talking the most (no surprises there!).
2. Exploring new places together
Unlike my solo walks, which are more routine, walks with company often involve planning. We’ll pack bags, hop in the car, and head to a scenic trail or nature reserve. These outings are longer, more adventurous, and always come with a destination in mind.
It is exciting to share beautiful landscapes and create memories as a family.

3. Feeling safer
I’ll admit it – I am not entirely comfortable walking alone in unfamiliar places, especially on hiking trails. Having Pietro or others with me gives me a sense of security, allowing me to enjoy the experience without worrying about what is around the corner.
4. Accountability and motivation
When I walk with others, I feel a sense of responsibility to keep going, even when I am tired. It is easier to push through longer walks or steeper trails when there is someone by your side cheering you on – or at least walking alongside you in mutual determination.
5. Childhood memories on the trail
Walking with my children has been an adventure in itself.
Elisa, our eldest, was always eager to lead the way, and heaven forbid anyone tried to overtake her!
Marco, on the other hand, would walk for a while before asking to be carried. To distract him, we’d ask about his favorite superhero or the latest book he was reading, which always bought us a little more time on the trail.
These moments, chaotic as they were, are some of my fondest memories.
The role of Blue in my walks
When we decided to get a dog, I imagined long, peaceful walks with my furry companion. However, Blue had different plans. For quite some time, he would stop every few meters to sniff around, mark his territory, or simply pause for no apparent reason.
Recently, though, he is become the perfect walking buddy. Now, he walks steadily ahead of me, stopping only once or twice. It is as if he finally understands our rhythm, making our walks together even more enjoyable.

Crowds and walking etiquette
One thing I struggle with – whether alone or in company – is walking in crowded places. Visiting popular parks or trails often feels overwhelming, especially when others disregard walking etiquette.
I find it frustrating when people block paths or let their dogs run wild, ignoring the comfort of others. It is a reminder of why I prefer quieter, less populated routes for my walks.
A walk for every mood
Ultimately, walking – whether alone or with others – offers incredible benefits. It reduces stress, keeps me active, and provides a sense of peace.
Some days, I crave the solitude and reflection of a solo walk; other times, I long for the shared laughter and companionship of walking with family or friends.
At the end of the day, the most important thing is to keep walking. The fresh air, the movement, and the moments – whether shared or personal – are what make it all worthwhile.
Thank you for spending time with me today!
See you next time.
Valentina
